"This is so cool!" and "Awesome!" were just some of the things you could hear as the fifth graders tried out the Classroom Performance System for the first time. CPS is a great way to make a lesson interactive. Each student receives their own device and is able to answer questions at their own pace. The teacher is then able to pull all the answers together to see which students answered correctly. The fifth graders have been very excited to use this new technology to practice for IOWAs and to review for upcoming test. They were thrilled to be able to share everything that they learned with their Kindergarten buddies. On Wednesday, March 28th Mrs. Lammers class come up to the 5th grade to complete a vowel sound lesson on the CPS. The buddies worked well together and look forward to working together with this new technology in the future!
In other news the fifth graders are excitedly working on their Science Fair projects. Some projects include what kind of food stains your teeth, how light affects the growth of plants and how a mento will react when placed in soda. They are all very excited to share their findings with the rest of the class on April 26th.

In January the 5th graders began to learn all about Physical Science. We learned how everything around us is made up of elements. We even listened to the famous “Element Song” by Tom Lehrer. Inspired by his song writing we made our own rap about the Period Table of Elements. We then moved on to learn about atoms and molecules. We took a trip to the Science Lab to investigate water molecules. Using wax paper and water we divided a drop of water into bits that were as small as possible. We learned that no matter how small a molecule of water is that it is still going to be considered water. We are looking forward to learning more about how new materials are made from different parts of matter. We will be in the Science Lab making a slime mixture to help us learn how new materials are formed. We will also be making a recipe book called “Marvelous Mixtures” to help us to understand the different between a solution and a mixture.
In February the students will be presented their “Living Biographies”. Each student had the opportunity to choose a famous person to research. They created posters about their person and then they dressed up and gave a presentation.
A lot of exciting things are happening in 5th grade!
