September was like a burst of sunshine as 25 kindergartner students came strolling through the doors of Saint Peter School. I saw enthusiastic faces, energetic bodies, and a hint of trepidation, among this promising group of children. That was when I knew they were on their way to a life long adventure of learning.
Now that the children know each other by name, and can follow the class rules they are ready to accomplish many tasks through cooperation and teamwork.
The most important lessons taught during the first three weeks of school is learning how to work and play independently and in small and large groups. Our days are filled with all kind of activities such as, learning, sharing, story time, drawing, writing, counting, singing, painting and playing. All of these tasks are balanced with the art of knowing how to listen, follow directions, take turns, play fair, and be kind to each other. Here is a glimpse of how the school year begins…

We have been using our five senses to observe the signs of fall approaching. We went on an exploratory walk so we could see and feel the signs of the season. We collected objects and investigated the objects through a magnifying glass.
We ended our unit by making applesauce. We identified all the five senses and recorded the observations on our rebus picture chart.
The first week in March we celebrated Dr. Seuss”s birthday. We enjoyed reading many of his zany, wacky and clever stories. We accomplished many hands on learning tasks for Cat in the Hat Day & Silly Sock Day. But Green Eggs and Ham Day was by far the most fun of all. To end our study of Dr. Seuss, we created a real object graph using our bodies to tell which Dr. Seuss book was our favorite. The results are in: One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish & Wacky Wednesday were the most favorite stories.
Our new Classroom Performance System a great way to make a lesson interactive. Each student receives their own device and is able to answer questions at their own pace. The teacher is then able to pull all the answers together to see which students answered correctly. The fifth grade class was thrilled to be able to share everything that they learned with their Kindergarten buddies to complete a vowel sound lesson on the CPS. The buddies worked well together and look forward to working together with this new technology in the future!
